DFI 8 - Dealing with Data
DFI - Dealing with Data (with Dave Winter) 14/08/2019
Agenda
Forms (Vanessa)
This a like to a great slide show to help how to use Forms .
My first Form attempt. Like the idea of using these. And students using them to make up their own questions for others to try. Different ways of being able to answer questions - multiple choice, short number answer, word answers.
Spreadsheet slides
Very helpful slideshow showing all about / how to spreadsheets
This activity was useful - spreadsheets and using parts of the data and manipulating and producing sums, averages and graphs.
Below is an example of graphed data from a selected students blog posts over 5 years.
Create -
Google Maps - our group picked 2 dream destinations from a given list and these were imported from a spreadsheet.
The information today was all useful. As most was new, the rapid speed through the ideas meant my understanding was limited. More time needed to practice. A 'big overload' as Dave said - but more prepared to try / take risks, so all good !!!
Ended the day with a couple of selfies using camera on laptop -

C2: DFI 7 - Northland: Computational Thinking (07/08/2019)
Todays agenda -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1GHdrPDPnDb5RHu3FQ2G4rdJ7YfKPDUEyiaPj2W9dZpI/edit?ts=5d4a0f1d
All about empowerment for the student learners.
Interesting ideas about student learning and making more decisions for themselves for their learning
Tried scratch for the first time. Great for computational thinking ideas. Thinking about codes and agreeing on a code/strategy to solve a problem. Our example was to discuss a code for one to talk the code so the other could draw.
This is an example of scratch - click on the green flag (top left below)
Students could use scratch and the speech bubbles to explain some of their learning.
Lots of stuff to see and try !!

DFI 6 - Visible Learning
Week 6
VISIBLE LEARNING
Todays agenda -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pxtO-v4FRlMKhavQj7vTj4yUc1NMbFVNDvS2L8J1DDg/edit?ts=5d3fd322#
Good intro from Dorothy
about visible learning and
making accessible to all.
Thought provoking.
Great to see other class websites from others in our group. Short presentations and feedback given. Good to get ideas to improve own website.
Time to spend on improving the appearance/content of own website and have help/support was so useful. Need a lot more time of course.
Own Yr9 website pages on Probability have now started to look so much more attractive and inviting to students. Images and links now added. Link to page improved today - Introduction to Probability
https://sites.google.com/boic.school.nz/yr9maths/probability/introduction
- should have recorded what had before the changes !!
So certainly now more capable and confident to move on and make website more attractive for learners.
A good, useful day. Many thanks.

Great to get a review/refresh on Harpara. Using it in a positive way - what will I see you doing when when you're using your device this lesson ? Encouragement with students to be on the right site(s).
The 'digital dig' was a great way to find out shortcuts and other useful things - need more time to look at this
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1d6Ydmzu0i8vw8TJsbZYQgyyRyX3EK6XlrAaw7I9Isis/edit#slide=id.g1c0fee4f16_0_0
Some great ideas / slides from Fiona to help students improve their blog writing.
This is my first attempt at a screencastify - and not even played back yet !! It is an area I would like to practice and learn - explain maths learning and post on our class website. Making a screen castify seems ok, the posting/sharing is more challenging. Students could also use to explain their leaning.
A challenging day and hard to keep up - but fantastic help from Kerry / Vanessa as always !!
Thanks !!

Week 4 DFI - Collaborative Sites
Week 4 DFI - Collaborative Sites
Great to have time today to practice what we have learnt and have the help available as always.
Today - Google Sites. Making the front page attractive, exciting and interesting. How to insert images with links to the site.Made a website from the beginning - certainly helped my confidence and capability and will use with learners in class.

Week 3. Media.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HE3qm_k8ttsPgfjMP-KzKU_Lu-yA5Amz_opsGAAQ_Dw/edit
Matt Goodwin with us from Pt.England School. Live stream with Kent Somerville - using HD camera, laptop webcam and dromes. All looks great. Aware of what is available and what is possible.
Helpful to know how to set up You Tube channel and own play list.
The idea of creating to learn - useful idea for own pedagogy. Looked at a maths Jeopardy game and how it is made in Google Slides. Did a couple of questions as in attachment below. Intend to use this create idea with a Year 9 class on Friday when students can make own questions and link answers. Should be good !!!
Need to explore more about Google Draw to see how can use with learners in maths class.
Own personal life - google slide shows for own photographs will be useful
Thanks again for a good day. Some of sessions very quick and starting point high - hard to follow.

DFI week 2
Week 2 12/06/2019
Well what a day !! All about Work Flow, Agenda here -
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RPpAwkauGo47WVrPKypXAkILXmw6vMpdsdHEwd116pI/edit
Google Keep - all about keeping notes / reminders & web addresses
G Mail - helping to organise and sort emails
Organising bookmarks - helpful
and Google Hangouts. The hangout we did as a large group worked ok. This pm we tried one with our group of 3 - with Julien and Janet in different rooms. We couldn't get it to work correctly despite lots of help from the ever patient Kerry & Vanessa !! But we did record something (at the bottom - couldn't carry on typing under the embedded video ?)
Going to have a go at hangout via Kerry during the week.

DFI Day 1
DFI (Day 1) 05/06/209
Interesting to hear about the origins and progression of Manaiakalani. And how the teacherdashboard began. The drive and vision of the group in Tamaki was very impressive - involving all, increasing engagement and results and gadgets on top of posts to enable internet access at home !!
Been able to begin tidying up and organising my Google Drive which has been very helpful.
Enjoyed the 'removing background' from photos and will practice this for sure !!
Pasting text - use 'without formatting'
Don't underline anymore !!
Using a Google doc - was rather restrictive in terms of moving text/photos around. Need a table and how to remove lines by making them the same colour.
Google groups need to revisit and try again.
